Abstract

This chapter presents the legal regime for the protection and preservation of the marine environment, following an integrated legal methodology which is open to the interaction between international, EU and domestic law (quintessential in this topic). To that end, the first task is to address the emergence of the marine environmental issue in the legal discourse and the need for its integrated and multilevel legal protection. Secondly, the legal regulation of each source of marine pollution is analysed, without prejudice to the necessary interaction between legal regimes. Finally, the conservation of marine biodiversity is analysed, a topic that has been divided in two autonomous topics: the management of fish stocks and the establishment of marine protected areas.
