Abstract
Libraries have been committed to scientific development since time immemorial. As social constructions designed to make information available and to archive scientific production, libraries have been side by side with the development of science and the satisfaction of researchers' information needs. The objective of this chapter is to question, from a theoretical point of view, the current process of change in science, as a path doubly influenced by its dynamics of openness and by changes in research libraries. A literature review on the relationship between libraries and scientific openness is presented. The literature shows that, although libraries stay on at the centre of the scientific process, they are challenged by several key actors in the complexity of the science production and dissemination scenario. During a profound cultural change, library and information science professionals face several relevant challenges. On the one hand, librarians are strongly involved in the future of science, as they always have been, as an important stakeholder in the system and as suppliers of information products and services. On the other hand, research libraries are changing their roles and traditional services to respond to the current needs of researchers and the demands for openness demanded by society. In a converging dynamic, the research libraries and the Open Science movement are, ultimately, two sides of the same coin - the development of science - and both attempt for it.
