Abstract

Endurance sports performance seems to be limited by oxygen transport capacity to the exercising muscle. Such finding has demanded an exhaustive search for substances and methods with such properties, regardless of how legal they are. Nowadays, approaches to fight blood doping encompass both direct testing and the athlete’s biological passport. In this review we focus on the different strategies used for blood doping – from blood transfusions to blood substitutes, not forgetting erythropoiesis stimulating agents.
