Em torno da filosofia da história: problemas e debates em autores portugueses na segunda metade de Oitocentos: Joaquim António da Silva Cordeiro

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyze the fundamental ideas of the philosophy of history in a Portuguese author, Joaquim António da Silva Cordeiro (1859-1915), who is at the origin of the reflection on the philosophy of history in Portugal. His conception is strongly marked by a philosophy of Enlightenment history, but nevertheless it does not fail to reveal in his exposition perennial elements that are part of universal history. Being a little-known and even relatively overlooked author, he has a certain interest for anyone who wants to know the genesis of a philosophy of history that in the mid-nineteenth century attempts to design a specific domain of action. This work was part of the research project of the Center for the Study of Portuguese Thought: Catholicism, Tradition and Progress in the second half of the 19th century (1850-1910), which ended in early 2012. Our attempt and effort therefore also consisted in showing how in Portugal the reflection on the philosophy of history followed course of development the history of ideas in Europe.
