Abstract

This paper reconstructs and analyzes the debates and agreements that took place in Mexico between civil and ecclesiastical authorities around the patronage between 1821 and 1835. Doing so, we try to understand the positions of the actors involved and the way in which this debate gave way to three moments: the debate of the positions between regalists and canonists between 1821 and 1827; the search for agreements between 1827 and 1831 and, finally, the conflict between Church and State between 1833 and 1834. In this last process, the interest of the Mexican government to consolidate itself as the highest authority in the country and the creation of an ecclesiastical project that the ecclesiastical hierarchy unequivocally called the Mexican Church since 1834.
