Abstract

Children are increasingly using technology at an ever-younger age. Parents have the primary role of guiding children in safe and relevant technology use for their learning. The objective of this research was to understand how parents perceive technology in relation to the parental mediation style when it comes to children using technology. Fifteen families with at least one child up to 6 years of age were interviewed in order to know their family practices and perceptions on technology and the parental mediation style performed. After analyzing the data, it was verified that the parental mediation is directly related to the parents' perceptions of technology: the parents with more experience and better perceptions on technology tend to adopt an authoritative style, guiding children in this sporadic co-use and relying on their children's practices; parents with negative perceptions tend to carry out authoritarian mediation, imposing rigid rules, namely time-of-use, devaluing children's use of technology
