Abstract
The present article evokes the figure of the Franciscan poet Frei Agostinho da Cruz (1540 - 1619), at the time of the 400th anniversary of his death and the 480th anniversary of his birth. Augustine is presented as a current poet whose reading is important in a civilizational moment when a polyhedral crisis needs directors who indicate the best ways to achieve inner freedom. Transcending the common places of poetry to the divine of his time and even a 16th century language, the arrabido friar presents a solid and theotopic work that, without exposing the inner conflicts and the psychos of the poetic subject, reflects on the erosion of human dignity during " crisis of rebirth", proposing universal and always contemporary escape lines, based on" longing for God ".
