Abstract
The present disclosure concerns the immobilization of Rhodococcus sp. FP1, a bacterial strain that degrades the pollutant 2-fluorophenol (2-FP), on extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) extracted from the biomass of Nereda® aerobic granules from wastewater treatment. In particular, EPS granules with immobilized Rhodococcus sp. FP1 can be used to bioenhance biological systems for treating wastewater contaminated with 2-FP. This new formulation uses a natural immobilizing material that is biocompatible with microorganisms and the wastewater treatment process, and is a quick solution to implement. The appearance of 2-FP contamination in wastewater can be a one-off or intermittent event, caused by fluctuations in industrial processes, which makes rapid action in its remediation highly important.
