Abstract

The aim of this article is to offer an interpretation of the references to Marão included in the documents 15 and 552 of the Liber Fidei of Braga, respectively dated 572 and 569. Our hypothesis is that these mentions should not be read in light of the context of the 6th century Suevic Kingdom or in the 9th and 10th century reign of Alfonso III of Asturias (†910). These documents may have been produced between the 11th and the 12th centuries in Braga to bolster the content of the Parrochiale Suevorum and to define better the diocesan space, adopting as a model the Galician diocese of Lugo and the division into eleven counties of its episcopal territory.
