Abstract
This article aims to identify the main problems and challenges facing support institutions for older people in terms of sustainability, from the point of view of their managers and local public authorities. A mixedmethod approach was used for this purpose, based on a questionnaire and interviews with institution managers and local public authorities, and it was also done an documentary research. During the study, a range of problems and challenges affecting the sustainability of institutions were identified, specifically: 1) depopulation; 2) lack of users; 3) families’ insufficient resources; 4) excessive construction of residential structures and other social support structures; 5) need to reduce operating costs; 6) removal of indebtedness; 7) improved staff satisfaction.
