Abstract
This study aims to characterize emotional intelligence, and analyze possible differences in results according to sociodemographic variables. 557 students in 8th grade participated, 289 girls and 268 boys between 11 and 15 years (M = 13.27, SD = .583) attending public schools in northern, central and southern Portugal. Emotional intelligence was assessed using the Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire Bar-On. Found significant differences by gender in the Intrapersonal dimension in favor of girls, and the General Mood scale in favor of boys according to age, the dimension Adaptability in favor of younger students; and, depending on geographic location in the intrapersonal dimension, for young people from the north.
