Abstract

This instrumental study describes the first validation study with the Portuguese Version of Freiburg's Personality Inventory-Revised (FPI-R), using a sample of 1099 university students. The FPI-R is composed by 138 dichotomous items («true» vs. «false»), distributed through twelve scales, ten standard scales (life satisfaction, social orientation, performance orientation, inhibition, irritability, aggressiveness, solicitation, somatic complaints, health concerns, and sincerity) and two supplementary scales (extroversion and emotionality). This inventory intends to comprise relatively wide constructs that contain narrow sub-constructs, which are organized both in unipolar scales (e.g. few somatic complaints - many somatic complaints), and bipolar scales (e.g. life dissatisfaction - life satisfaction). The main findings of this study reveal that the Portuguese version of this instrument has a similar factor structure to the original, even though there are some problems in terms of the subscales' reliability. These results and weaknesses are discussed, and some possible solutions for further developments are presented.
