Abstract

The doctoral research project "Digital Strategies in Museums" addresses the evolving landscape of museums and the contemporary museology, with a primary focus on the integration of digital technology into museum operations. Recognizing the lack of adequate attention to the digital transformation of museums, this research aims to provide a more comprehensive approach. By examining the challenges and opportunities of digitalization, the project seeks to identify key actions to enhance visitor engagement, improve operational efficiency, and optimize resource management in museums. Specifically, the ongoing investigation focuses on the Portuguese National Museums managed by Museums and Monuments of Portugal, E.P.E. (MMP), aiming to formulate recommendations for an adjusted and networked digital strategy. This strategy will support a more effective digital transformation, enabling museums to navigate the complexities of the digital age. The investigation comprises four main stages - Literature Review, Portuguese National Museums’ Framework, Digital Framework, and Validation of Results - each with specific objectives and tasks. The subsequent discussion outlines a segment of the findings from the Literature Review stage, which examines Museums’ evolution in Europe and Portugal, alongside the evolution of Digital Technology and its role in museum operations
