Is Portugal speaking portuglish? A study in lexicography

The work of a lexicographer neither entails fixing rules nor correcting speakers' usage nor suggesting models to be followed, but rather is concerned with reporting the forms that speakers actuallyuse. Given this, what ought his/her role to be concerning linguistic imports? The main aim of this work is to observe and analyse the way in which the Portuguese language has absorbed a great number of English imports, studying how lexicographers have addressed the issue of linguistic trends. Portugal appears divided between two positions: either the seemingly logical yet unsuccessful dictatorial attitude as followed by the French or a liberal standpoint based on description rather than rules.
