Abstract

The occurrence of the 1600th anniversary of the death of St. Jerome (in 420) – the great translator of the Bible – is an opportunity to draw a brief parallel with what was, for many years, one of the great activities and a remarkable contribution of José Ramos to portuguese culture. The importance of the translation called Vulgata – determinant in the space of western culture – lends context and meaning to the path that José Ramos carried out throughout his life, also integrated in his own academic process, opening perspectives to many students who benefited from his university work and who, for him, also felt that this activity has strong repercussions on cultural identity and on the formulation of many concepts that are close to us.
