Abstract
In this article, we will theoretically discuss the multiple contexts conducive to the emergence of local currencies and reflect on how these currencies can converge as a solution or contribute to solve problems that emerge from the expansion of economic rationality and the values associated with it. We will be emphasizing three cases of local currency in Portugal: Lixo, Tear and Santo António. Tear and Santo António are part of broader projects that go beyond the scope of local currency creation and extend to social phenomena such as social exclusion, unemployment and sustainable consumption. In its current form, Lixo is a project that was created with the objectives of revitalizing local commerce and promoting waste separation habits.
