Abstract

This study aimed to differentiate love trauma from prolonged grief following romantic relationship dissolution by identifying their common and distinct predictors. Using a cross-sectional design, we examined sociodemographic/relational factors and constructs like infidelity, intrusive thoughts, relationship satisfaction, breakup intention, conflict, and trust. Factor analyses confirmed instrument validity. Multiple regressions identified predictors, and path analysis explored mediating relationships. Analyses yielded well-fitting measurement models. Common predictors for both conditions included time since break-up, suffering, recovery time, relationship dissatisfaction, intrusive thoughts, and conflict. Distinct predictors were relational status, breakup experience, and breakup intention for love trauma, and age and the breakup’s initiator for prolonged grief. Path analysis revealed that dissatisfaction with one’s romantic life fully mediated the relationship between breakup intention and conflict with both outcomes. Intrusive thoughts had both direct and indirect effects, mediated by relationship dissatisfaction. The findings clarify the shared and unique mechanisms of love trauma and prolonged grief, underscoringthe central mediating role of relationship dissatisfaction. This provides a framework for better understanding and addressing post-relationship emotional distress.
