Abstract

The chromatic reintegration of a painting is always a challenge for conservator-restorers, and the decision on how to reintegrate is generally based on the value and function of the works. However, the choice of which reintegration technique is the most appropriate is not always easy to justify. To try to answer this question, a geographic information system (GIS), called QGIS®, was used. Through the vector edition, several thematic maps were made in order to record the gaps that were observed in the paintings. The analysis carried out with the aid of the GIS allowed to make the spatial characterization of the losses in the area, in order to contribute to the decision making of the reintegration technique to be applied. As a case study, one academic painting by Adriano de Sousa Lopes (1879-1944) were used. In the chromatic reintegration two known techniques of conservation and restoration were used: the mimetic process and pointillism.
