We aim to present a characterization of the meaning expansion of “chegar” in BP by students in their texts. We start from studies about conceptual metaphors, metonymiesand categorization, and from the principles of Cognitive Grammar. We analyzed the occurrences in TecEM Corpus, which were categorized according to their meanings. The figurative mechanisms responsible for the conceptual organization were described, revealing four groups of meanings. We argue that metaphor, metonymy, and subjectification are complementary mechanisms in these meaning extension processes. It seems to be a continuum from the most concrete meaning to the most abstract one, indicating a grammaticalization process.
