Abstract

Torque may influence the failure of implant rehabilitation due to excess or insufficient torque values applied in the prosthetic components. So it is important to understand the reliability and performance behavior of manual torque wrenches used in implant dentistry. An experimental study was carried out to test the mechanical behavior of two torque wrenches with different dynamometric systems. Three working tables with an analogue, straight standard abutment, and straight screw were prepared for the selected torque devices. For each torque wrench, 30 tightening/loosening cycles were performed for the preselected values, 10, 20 and 35 N.cm. A dynamometric measurement cell was used to register the value. Both systems presented significant lower values than the preselected torque (p < 0.001). Significant different values were also observed between the two systems being toggle-style inferior to spring-style system (p < 0.001). Within the limitations of this research, it can be concluded that the analyzed torque wrench systems presented torque values different from those preselected. Also, the type of dynamometric system can also give different torque values.
