Abstract

n 1947, the Portuguese government recognised the shortage of nurses, and in 1952, the Ministry of the Interior authorised the opening of new nursing schools. The regulations for nursing courses allowed the schools at the time to teach nursing assistants and nursing courses (general, specialised and complementary). On 16 July 1965, the Nursing School of Guarda was created, strengthening local health institutions, which had previously depended on religious nursing at the Dr. Francisco dos Prazeres Hospital and specialised nursing at the Sanatorium.
