Abstract

The historical and material memory of the wool industry of Lordelo do Ouro has been limited to what is currently known about the Plácido Lino dos Santos Teixeira’s woollen mill, near the Ribeira de Lordelo, in the early years of the 19th century. However, this paradigmatic mill, which would work for over almost 200 years, has not always been fully understood. Not only its simple chronological line of events but also some aspects of its material dimension. At the same time, its industrial significance in the Portuguese context also deserves a new reading, in the sense of a new understanding of the international technological transfer played by Plácido Lino’s mill. On the other hand, there is another memory, usually exclusively historiographic, of a previous mill, founded in the 18th century, by the brothers Pedro and Domingos Martins Gonçalves and Francisco Xavier Arantes, but almost unknown today. This work seeks, through a varied methodology, of documental, material and cartographic analysis, to establish lines of sequential understanding of the two mills, their destinies, their eventual merger and oblivion.
