Abstract

Reflecting on various topics, Miguel Esteves Cardoso gained visibility, during the last two decades of the 20th century, mainly because of his opinion pieces issued on newspapers such as Expresso and O Independente, which he led. These opinion pieces were rapidly published in book, which ensured that they would not fall into oblivion, allowing the contemporary reader to discover a vision about the Portuguese identity that is simultaneously conservative, funny and disruptive.
Believing that Miguel Esteves Cardoso is one of the most original thinkers of contemporary portugality, his perspective towards lusophony cannot be neglected. Never denying that language is the common heritage between Portugal and formerly colonized territories, Esteves Cardoso manifest his distrust of the Orthographic Agreement project, from the moment it starts to take shape. However, as we seek to show such skepticism sets up a defense of the language and of its diversity.
