Abstract

Author of Portugal no Concílio de Trento [Portugal in the Council of Trent] and a leading fgure in our ecclesiastical historiography, Monsignor José de Castro (1886-1966) produced a remarkable work in a very short time. Francisco Manuel Alves, the famous Abbot of Baçal, repeatedly underlined his «tenacity and investigative strength served by easy language that attracts without tiring, despite so much erudition». Placing the practice and work of Monsignor José de Castro in its time, here we will analyse the work A Santa e Real Casa da Misericórdia de Bragança [The Holy and Royal House of the Mercy of Bragança] (1948), a detailed history of this benefcial charity institution, from its origins, with Queen Leonor, until our days.
