Abstract

Background: Academic motivation has been the subject of several investigations, resulting in many theories about motivation assessment, different in how they perceive or omit personal, social, and contextual factors, even though they share common concepts and characteristics. The theory of self-determination is the main theory in assessing the quality and intensity of motivation. In turn, there have been numerous scales of evaluation of the motivation of the student of higher education. Aim: This research presents as objectives the study and evaluation of academic motivation in Portuguese higher education based on the theory of self-determination, as well as the study of psychometric properties of the Scale of Academic Motivation proposed by Guimarães and Bzuneck (2008), as a contribution to its validation for the Portuguese population. Method: The study involved two samples of a bachelor's degree and a master's degree course of Portuguese public higher education students, with a national scope: the first sample of 568 students and the second sample of 589 students. Data were processed using the software SPSS 25 and AMOS 25, with descriptive statistics, a confirmatory factor analyses, and a multiple group analysis. Results: It was verified that the extrinsic motivation by integrated regulation was the most relevant type of motivation in both samples, reason why it is concluded that although the student identifies with the value of the activity, it acts according to what will reach with the action. It was also verified the validity of the re-specified scale in the evaluation of student motivation and its robustness, as well as the invariance of the proposed model among the presented samples. Conclusions: Considering motivation as a predictive element of academic performance and success, its importance in the context of research and the need to be assessed through adapted scales are highlighted. In this research, a robust scale model of academic motivation evaluation is presented.
