Abstract

This work consists of a museum project for the preservation and valorization of a large neglected cultural property related to Portuguese courts of law and justice. This proposal emerges as a natural progression of a project for the registration and cataloging of a substantial number of cultural assets within the courts, developed by the author in a professional capacity within a department of justice institution. The inventory encompasses an important art collection related to justice, court furniture, objects, and documentation.

The solution proposed for the Domus Ivstitiae Museum ("House of Justice" in Latin) entails a broad network museum structure, comprising a central administrative unit for administration and management, as well as a tiered system of museum units located in courthouses throughout the country. These units, owing to their historical and artistic significance, justify the cultural program. Due to its implementation and the nature and interest of its contents (covering history, art, and anthropology), this museum bears a national character. While its origins are closely linked to the registration and conservation of court cultural holdings, the museum's objectives have been defined with the social aim of bringing justice closer to the general public. Consequently, this museum's concept entails the establishment of a comprehensive program for social and cultural activities and services, intending to serve as a project for citizenship.

Ultimately, this work serves as a reminder of the urgent need to preserve the memory of justice, a legacy that has long been overlooked and neglected.
