Abstract
The paper discusses how scientists at the Faculdade Nacional de Filosofia acted in the political field to gain support for their activities. The Núcleo de Estudos e Pesquisas Científicas, which was created in 1956 on the initiative of a group of professors, is analyzed. Their main goal was to educate researchers in the domains of mathematics, physics, chemistry and natural history. Its creation had a patriotic ideal, which highlighted the need to development of scientific research for the progress of the country. This research also aims to contribute to the understanding of how science and technology policy were cultivated in the mid-20th century in Brazil.
