Abstract
This paper addresses the vicissitudes and symbolic representations of a bust of Guerra Junqueiro, in bronze, by Mestre Teixeira Lopes, perhaps the last work of the sculptor, who died on June 21st , 1942. As a result of a public subscription, the sculpture was placed at Largo Dr. Guerra, in front of the Town Hall of Freixo de Espada à Cinta, in the north of Portugal. The inauguration took place on September 15th, 1950, the official opening date of the celebrations of the centenary of the birth of the Poet of "Os Simples", with the presence of members of the government and of international institutions, to the sound of music and with a small plane throwing flowers. The idea of erecting, in his birthplace, a monument to the memory of Guerra Junqueiro goes back to 1938.
