Abstract
One of the greatest intellectual achievements throughout the last century was the incorporation of Cosmology –by that time, a marginalized area due to its relation to metaphysics and theology – to the set of natural sciences– in particular, physics and astronomy. In this article, we present, in general terms and in a lay-person language, one of the first great achievements of cosmology: the idea that the universe is expanding, which was initially rejected by the one who is seen as the creator of that field, Albert Einstein. Although part of the community of cosmologists during those times usually distrusted or even rejected the view of an expanding universe, this idea was confirmed on an observational basis by Astronomy during the decade of the 20s.
