Abstract

Regarding the 16th century and the early of the 17th century, only a few paintings have a secure attributed authorship. This difficulty increases specially with the paintings executed by more than one artist. Despite the research carried out until now, there are still many lacunae to solve by new painting studies and identifications. The wooden panel paintings analyzed in this article are displayed on the walls of the Oporto’s Cathedral sacristy can be mentioned as an example of such problematic. This paper aims to clarify the historical issues related with the permanence of these wooden panel paintings in the Cathedral of Oporto, and to determine its authorship. Accordingly, a comparative studyof the materiality and technique of the two painters Francisco Correia and Simão Rodrigues is made.
