Abstract

In the beginning of the XIX century, the Viscount of Lapa entrusted the organization of the House's archive to his brother Friar José de Almeida e Vasconcelos. The inventories he then created methodically arranged the documents that supported the rights and estates of the House. The Count of Lapa, the Viscount's son, made use of these books but he created his own management catalogues. The zealous organization of the House of Lapa was commonplace among the Portuguese Nobility. It was based on family honour and aimed to avert loss in uncertain times.
