    Abstract

Scientific journals from different disciplinary areas are a privileged means of sharing scientific knowledge, which increasingly seek to strengthen their visibility and credibility, as well as to promote greater impact, objectives that can largely be achieved through the rigor and quality of their editorial processes. In this way, the use of specific software for this purpose has assumed a central role, by allowing the integration of all stages of the editorial process into a single system, facilitating the implementation of guidelines and good practices defined at national and international levels, as well as promoting the transparency of contents and editorial procedures. Among these platforms, Open Journal Systems (OJS) stands out for its wide use in the national context, being adopted by around 90% of Portuguese scientific journals registered in INDEXAR, the national reference directory coordinated by FCT/FCCN. The growing demand for compliance with the principles of Open Science, as well as with international indexing criteria, makes the analysis of the functionalities made available in this system particularly relevant. Based on the experience of optimizing the Journals Portal of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, this proposal aims to present to the editorial community a set of plugins developed for OJS with the potential to strengthen compliance with Open Science good practices and to support indexing in reference databases. It is considered that the activation of these plugins constitutes a simple and accessible measure for journals that use this platform, allowing immediate and significant improvement in editorial transparency, interoperability and the visibility of their portals. This analysis was guided by the principles of the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science, adopted in 2021, of Coalition S and of the Diamond Open Access model, as well as the mandatory or recommended indexing criteria of five international databases: DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journal), Latindex, Scopus, SciELO (Scientific Eletronic Library Online) and Web of Science. Based on this framework, seven free OJS plugins (version 3.3) were selected, more directly associated with the implementation of persistent identifiers and with interoperability between systems, namely at the level of metadata sharing: Publication Facts Label, Research Organization Registry (ROR), ORCID Profile, Funding Data, DOAJ Export Plugin, Hypothes.is and PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN) Plugin. These plugins will be described and analyzed in greater detail, considering their potential contribution, as well as their main advantages and limitations in the context of editorial management.
