Abstract

The triumph of liberalism in Portugal in 1834 deeply affected the structure of the Church, so far connected with the absolute regime. The ecclesiastical institutions ended up being controlled by politicians who established a new order based on freedom. Such control also affected episcopal appointments, resulting in long diplomatic disputes between the Portuguese government and the Holy See, because they did not always agree on the profile of the candidates. This study focusses on D. Américo Ferreira dos Santos Silva, Bishop of Oporto (1871-1899). First, the work considers his episcopal appointment, which lasted nearly two years, between 1869 and 1871. Then it analyses his royal appointment as “cardinal of the crown” after two years of negotiations (1877-1879). This episode is particularly relevant because it shows the new Roman attitude towards Portuguese civil institutions during the pontificate of Leo XIII. In both cases, Portuguese government pressures, Roman resistance to civil power, the Portuguese diplomacy and the personal ecclesiastical and political ability of D. Américo Ferreira dos Santos Silva played a key role.
