Abstract

Camilo Castelo Branco expresses, in several steps of his fictional work, his admiration for the speech of the people of the northern provinces of Portugal. His lasting contact with the people of Trás-os-Montes and Minho was, in fact, one of the main sources of his very rich linguistic training, combined with his fruitful reading of the Portuguese classics. It is our objective to review and analyze the metalinguistic comments of narrators on popular terms and phrases, both in the characters' speeches and in the narrative discourse itself. We will seek, on the other hand, to inquire about the epochal and individual motivations that underlie this theoretical and practical defense of Camilo in relation to the language of the people.
