Abstract

Higher education, as an active factor in human development, plays a vital role in the development of society and is currently the result of a successive set of educational reforms and adaptation to new contexts, realities and requirements. The current Portuguese higher education system takes the binary form, which, together with the dual public and private higher education, contribute to the current state of differentiation and diversity of this level of education. In Portugal, quality assurance is ensured by the accreditation of programs, although the emphasis is on encouraging the adoption of internal quality assurance systems and awareness of the need for quality, given the organizational autonomy found at this level of education.
