Abstract
This research proposes a theorization on the global dimension of Portuguese language within the context of information society. It is an interpretive approach, whereby we analyse the current status of the Portuguese-Brazilian speaking space within the context of that major web, the Internet. This research analyses also the importance of the different media, the mobility enabled by both digital media and the movements of people in the Portuguese-Brazilian space. The space of lusophony is taken into account within the Portuguese-Brazilian framework and its relations within the contemporary globalised society.
This research begins with a wide-ranging theoretical approach, with a primary focus on the reflection on the phenomena of Portuguese language in the Portuguese-Brazilian space, globalisation, information and communication technologies, and communication as founder, producer and re-producer of reality. This theoretical framework considers right from the start the different socio-cultural approaches in communication sciences and gathers contributions from other areas as well, exploring communication and the use of the new information technologies as a context for a ‘global Portuguese language’. We considered a number of research projects on the subject in an attempt to show, suggest and highlight the relevance of new technologies, its use and the environment they create for communication in contemporary times.
After the conceptual articulation developed in chapters two, three, four and five, we present and analysis of the Portuguese-Brazilian relation in the current society and the emergence of ‘Portuguese global language’. Our work proposes new perspectives, developed from theories, notions e and arguments presented throughout the research process. Our interpretativist analysis of results confirms the role of Portuguese language as communication interface, context and vehicle, at a time when there is a renewed interest in Portuguese culture and a strong emergence of Brazil. However, in a information society operating a in a major network, the concept of ‘Portuguese language defines better the potential of communication of this language, the nature and possibility of a community defined by the global use of Portuguese language in detriment of the concept of lusophony, hence providing a much easier and quicker understanding of its role in the international context.
