Abstract

Introduction: The handover / handoff consists of the process of transferring responsibility that is, the information from a patient, from one caregiver to another or from the caregivers to the patient and family, in order to allow continuity of care and with a view to the safety of the patient. sick. The Emergency Service (SE), as the recipient of the critical patient, has particularities that hinder effective communication, so it is essential to have a thorough handover in order to improve the quality and safety of the patient within the health system. Thus, we chose to carry out an integrative literature review. Aim: To identify the factors promoting and inhibiting the critical patient's handover in the SE, to know the content to be transmitted in the critical patient's handover in the SE and to identify tools to support the handover. Material and methods: An integrative review was carried out, following the methodology proposed by Joanna Briggs Institute, through the combination of MesH terms using the EBSCO host - Research Databases database, in the CINAHL complete, MEDLINE complete, Cochrane Central Register databases Of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Methodology Register, in the languages Portuguese and English and in the time frame from 2010 to 2020. Results: The sample was found by seven studies in which five categories were identified, namely, promoting factors and factors that inhibit transfer, transfer content, transfer tools and recommendations for improving transfer. Conclusions: The research carried out revealed the importance of handover in the emergency department. A focus on quality promotes a safe care transition. The use of standardized tools, a structured language and specialized teams increase the quality of care and the results of patients, with less morbidity. It is essential to invest in interdisciplinary and interinstitutional training in this area, as the appropriate handover brings benefits to patients, professionals and the health system.
