Abstract
The school failure in the first year of higher education assumes expressive dimensions in most of universities and courses. Thus, this paper presents the perceptions of a student and a teacher on the causes of school failure in the first year of university and possible strategies to adopt in order to reduce this phenomenon. Using a qualitative methodology, and the technique of semi-structured interview, the study found that the failure in the first year of university is due to multiple factors among which stands out the poor preparation of students in primary and secondary school; the long break that students face after finishing high school, caused by the shortage of places in public universities and the lack of funding to attend a private university. Other school failure factors are related to poor preparation of teachers, the adopted methods of teaching and assessing the students, and the bureaucratic functioning (poorly articulated) of higher education institutions. To combat school failure, this paper suggests the creation of support centers for students in that situation in universities. Furthermore, at the classroom level, teachers should support more and take into account the needs of each student, so that they can better understand the content of lessons.
