Abstract

The historical vicissitudes that Portuguese ecclesiastical institutions, especially monastic ones, went through forced them, from very early on, to safeguard their documentary funds. To this end, they chose to produce mana-gement and research tools, such as inventories and catalogues, but also cartularies and tombos where documents were copied. The monastery of Grijó is no exception: there, too, and throughout the centuries, this double strategy of producing inventories and tombos was chosen. In this study, we will focus our attention on the latter, trying to understand which pontifical documents the canons regular considered essential to preserve and, also for this reason, had them copied in tombos written in the Early Modern Age.
