Abstract

Objective: to evaluate the correlation between age and heel skin temperature in healthy and hospitalized individuals. Methodology: this is a secondary analysis of partial data from a before-and-after study and a self-controlled randomized clinical trial (RCT). The first study (October 2022) investigated the impact of applying pressure for 30 minutes on the skin microclimate over bony prominences in healthy adults. The second study (March 2019 to February 2020) evaluated the effectiveness of dressings in preventing pressure injuries on the heels of surgical patients. The secondary analysis was conducted in August 2024, including baseline heel temperature data from all participants in both studies. Skin temperature was measured in ºC using an infrared digital thermometer. To assess the correlation between quantitative variables, Spearman's correlation test was performed. Results: 25 healthy adults (50 heels) and 91 hospitalized adults and elderly patients in the preoperative phase of cardiac surgery (182 heels) were included. Similar mean heel temperatures were found in both participant groups, ranging from 26.7ºC to 27.7ºC. A statistically significant low correlation between age and left heel temperature in healthy adults was identified. Conclusions: It was concluded that there is no correlation between age and heel skin temperature.
