Abstract

We analyzed the motivations that Catholic seminarians in Portugal evoke as
important factors for their decision to follow the priesthood. We proposed working hypotheses according to which the speech of seminarians could refect both the infuence of classical religious socialization, agents like family and the parish community, as well as more subjective elements related to the idea of a vocation to the priesthood. The results indicated the presence of these factors and showed that the reasons related to the priestly vocation and desire to serve God and the Church appear as more important than the infuence of family or other reasons.
