Abstract

Social Work performs a central role in preventive, assistance, and political interventions in Education in Portugal. The specific training of a social worker, the competences specialized competences, the intervention methodology and the nature of his/her work, make him/her become a privileged professional to act, in an educational and social inclusion’ perspective, in five dimensions: student, family, institution (school), community and politics. Mobilizing national and international literature, it is proposed to present the role of a social worker in the field of Education and his/ her contributions, and implications for the future. Conclusions indicate that a social worker comprises relevant contributions against social inequalities registered in schools, becoming a reference for the design and development of educational and inclusive policies. The need for political and academic investment is recommended.
