Abstract
From the 80s of the XX century several studies that were inserted in the movement of effective schools emerged and came to show that the school influences the educational achievement of students, envisaging the school unit as an organization has specific effects on how it carries out education and the quality of learning provided. The movement of effective schools wanted to show that schools can make a difference in improving educational outcomes of most students. The various investigations carried out on school effectiveness have confirmed that the school can be a place of reproduction and/or production, an instance that promotes the (un)equal opportunities for access and success existing intra-organizational factors that may directly or indirectly, explain the differences in educational achievement of students even considering their context of origin. This phenomenon is called value added. Currently, in Portugal, there are schools operating in similar educational backgrounds and have different educational attainment, adding, maintaining or decreasing value, so it is advisable to understand what drives this difference. In this sense, we intend to present evidence/research findings already ever produced in this area, namely which organizational factors characterize effective schools and what effect the school has on student learning.
