Abstract
This paper offers a conceptual map of Lexical Semantics and a descriptive illustration with insights taken from some of our lexical and semantic case studies of Portuguese. In the framework of Congnitive Linguistics, we will discuss the conceptual, dynamic and encyclopedic nature of lexical meaning from three interconnected perspectives: meaning in the mind (focusing on the phenomenon of polysemy), meaning in culture (highlighting the cultural specificities of lexical concepts) and meaning in society (showing the social meanings of lexical variation).
