Abstract

This article looks into facial expression (EF) as a phonological parameter in Portuguese Sign Language (LGP). In LGP, facial expression assumes grammatical linguistic functions, and it promotes intonation and morphophonological structure in LGP signs. EF does not posess the same linguistic value in every sign language in the world. In this article we propose the not confirmed hypothesis that EF might have a more relevant part in sign languages that have obeyed the orientations of the Milan Congress (1880). This is the case of LGP.
