Parents' experiences during their child's stay in the nicu or picu: a scoping review protocol

Research output: Other contributionpeer-review

Abstract

Objective: To map the available evidence on the emotional experiences of parents with a critically ill child in the NICU or PICU. Introduction: Having a child admitted to the neonatal or pediatric intensive care unit is an unexpected event that affects both the child and their entire family. Since this can be a highly stressful experience for parents and considering that they are the child's primary source of strength and support, it is crucial for nurses to understand their needs and involve them in their child's care. The effects of a child’s admission to an intensive care unit can persist long-term, potentially influencing the child's future health and development. Inclusion criteria: Studies focusing on understanding parents' experiences and needs during their child's stay in the NICU or PICU. Methods: The scoping review will follow the principles recommended by the Joanna Briggs Institute. The search will be conducted in three electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, and Scopus), and the search for grey literature will be conducted in RCAAP and ProQuest. Only articles written in English or Portuguese will be considered.
