Introduction: Standard tools used in the assessment of aphasic patients are normally extensive and exhaustive, so as to allow for detailed results and an accurate diagnosis. However these tests are often inappropriate for assessment in acute and subacute stroke. Patients with this condition are not able to collaborate in long and complex tasks. In such cases shorter tests should be used, as they can be conducted more easily. This kind of tests currently lack in Portugal. Objective: The objective of the present study is the translation and adaptation of an aphasia- screening test for the Portuguese population, namely the Bedside de Lenguaje (BL; Sabe et al., 2008). This instrument may be used by any health care professional. Methodology: The study was conducted with a sample of 112 participants, of which 61 were diagnosed with aphasia resulting from left hemisphere stroke and 51 non-aphasic dysarthric patients following right hemisphere stroke. Both groups were examined through BL and a formal battery of aphasia assessment for convergent validity analysis. Results and conclusion: Differences were observed in BL values between the aphasic and the non-aphasic groups: the latter showed significantly higher results, as patients had no language pathology. Results obtained showed good convergent validity in the correlation between BL results and the severity of the Aphasia Quotient. Moreover the test evidenced good reliability and measure exactness, as well as favorable sensitivity and specificity values. Therefore this tool may be useful for aphasia screening in the future, especially in the acute phase following brain injury.
