Abstract

The major chemical features of the hemicellulosic polymers present in biomass (xylans, mannans, xyloglucans, arabinogalactans, and mixed linkage β-glucans) are discussed, as well as their conversion into oligosaccharides by physicochemical, chemical and/or enzymatic processing. Selected strategies for the manufacture of purified oligosaccharide concentrates are summarized. The biological properties of oligosaccharides obtained by partial hydrolysis of hemicelluloses are reviewed, with special focus on their prebiotic activity.
