Abstract

This article presents the history of the «SOS Azulejo Project» created by the Judicial Police Museum in 2007 as a reaction – but also acting proactively – against an extremely negative and destructive scenario of Portuguese historic and artistic tile heritage. With the partnership of several different entities, the project carried out an innovative series of pragmatic and awareness-raising actions to safeguard, enhance and study this unique and identity Portuguese cultural heritage, achieving extremely positive results, such as the dramatic reduction in registered thefts of Portuguese historic and artistic tiles; stopping the demolition wave of tiled facades and removal of tiles from the same facades in the whole Portuguese territory (through the proposal for a new specific legislation, approved by Parliament in 2017); and the attribution in 2013 of the «European Union Grand Prix for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra» (never before or after attributed to Portugal).
