Abstract

The parental involvement with the education and the school is one of the biggest predictors of academic performance of their children. The aim of this study was to adapt and validate the Parent-Teacher Involvement Inventory - Parent version (Miller & Johnson-Maumary-Gremaud, 1995) for the Portuguese population. The Questionário de Envolvimento entre Pais e Professores – versão Pais (QEPP-Pais) is a self-report instrument that assesses four dimensions of the relationship between the parents: 1) Number and type of contacts; 2) Parents’ interest and subjective feeling of comfort in talking with teacher; 3) Parental satisfaction with the children school; and 4) The degree of parental involvement on the children education. The QEPP-Pais is a questionnaire composed by 26 items, with Likert-type response with five options. The sample consisted by 324 parents of Portuguese secondary school students. The results reveal that the Portuguese version of the instrument has a factor structure similar to the original instrument. Although slightly below comparing with the original version, the Cronbach’s alpha values of the subscales found in the Portuguese version are acceptable. These results suggest that the Questionário de Envolvimento entre Pais e Professores - Versão Pais (QEPP-Pais) is an instrument with suitable properties for use in the Portuguese population.
